Before everyone became a multi-hyphen (professionals with more than one specialty),
There was Buckminster Fuller.
He worked as an engineer, mapmaker, architect, teacher, poet, editor, businessman, inventor, futurist, sailor, scholar, and more.
Rather than limiting himself to one profession, Bucky described himself as a:
– Comprehensive anticipatory design scientist
He used science and good design to anticipate problems that people might experience in the future.
Even though he was born in late 1800, he anticipated the scarcity of natural resources.
Throughout his career, he encouraged the efficient use of resources to improve designs and care for the planet.
Bucky encouraged collaboration with his “Spaceship Earth” concept – We’re all crew members on a large ship called earth and we need to work together.
He pushed for design science to address global problems like poverty, housing, and unequal distribution of resources.
He was a Medal of Freedom recipient and appeared on the cover of Time Magazine.
Even though Bucky failed numerous times, he had the great fortune of his loving and supportive wife, Anne, who was his full-time supporter and cheerleader for his efforts.
He found his purpose in using design science to improve the quality of life for many and inspired many, including me, to think about humanity on a global scale.
