If you’re like me, you pay attention to details and have a tough time handing things over to others.
It’s a bad habit that is stopping you from achieving your goals.
Here is how to duplicate yourself:
- Become the Teacher – Pick your favorite movie with the master student trope. Become Mr. Miyagi.
To free yourself, find the right person with the core skills you require. They don’t have to have experience.
Teach them how you:
- come up with ideas and research them, and
- problem solve, and
- speak to clients.
Let them sit with you in meetings to take notes. No need for introductions or participation.
These types of small roles free up your time and help the student understand your mind.
You will speed up workflow on decision-making.
Share your resources, tips, and tricks.
- Become the Observer – Spend time watching your student how they do their work.
Continue to share your tips, tricks, and resources.
Introduce them in meetings. Have them ask questions and answer one or two.
- Become the Liberator – Change their title and introduce them as the point person to clients.
Let them run the meeting. Don’t micromanage. Tell them they don’t have to report on every detail.
Offer “Office Hours” when they get stuck with pricing, client challenges, or work scope changes.
Let them know you trust them to succeed.
Document your process so that when you begin to grow your team, you can hand off this to someone else.
Great entrepreneurs are great teachers.
