Thursday Guidance: How to Structure Succession Conversations So They Don’t Collapse

Productive succession conversations require structure. Without it, discussions drift into defensiveness or avoidance.

 

A workable structure includes four elements:

 

Acknowledgment

Before discussing the future, acknowledge what has already been built. This is not ceremonial. It stabilizes the conversation.

 

Role Definition

Clarify operational roles separately from family relationships. Titl es matter less than decision rights.

 

Transition Milestones

Succession works better as a sequence than a moment. Define milestones for authority transfer, not just dates.

 

Exit Boundaries

Discuss what stepping back actually looks like. Ambiguity here is one of the most common sources of post-succession conflict.

 

Structure does not remove emotion from succession. It gives emotion a container so it doesn’t dominate the process.
