Wednesday Educational Post: Three Succession Patterns That Predict Conflict

Over time, certain succession patterns reliably produce conflict. Recognizing them early can prevent escalation.

 

1. The Shadow Leader Pattern

The founder steps back formally but continues to influence decisions informally. This undermines the successor’s credibility and creates confusion across the organization.

 

2. The Undefined Readiness Pattern

Families argue about whether the next generation is “ready,” without defining what readiness means. The debate becomes subjective, emotional, and endless.

 

3. The Equal Treatment Assumption

Siblings are treated equally despite unequal involvement, capability, or interest. What feels fair on paper often feels deeply unfair in practice.

 

These patterns aren’t moral failures, but structural issues. When families recognize which pattern they’re living in, the conversation can shift from blame to design. That shift alone reduces conflict.
