Why using “Woke” as a Pejorative is Bad for Your Business

Why using “Woke” as a Pejorative is Bad for Your Business

Posted by Marcelo Bermudez

An investor bragged on LinkedIn about why he disqualifies all opportunities to invest if the business owner exhibits any kind of ‘wokeness.’

Aside from the ‘bro-ey’ features of his LinkedIn profile and his Walmart patriotism (brandishing the US Flag in his photo), it did not offend me.

It made me sad. This guy is missing out.

His ‘anti-woke’ guideline was a disparaging comment for the sake of being mean – a throwaway.

It showed his insecurity and unwillingness to examine a person beyond the surface.

Racism undermines the full potential of society.

It is also a business issue.

It stifles creativity – Diversity boosts innovation and financial performance. Studies prove it.

It increases absenteeism and health issues in the workplace.

It leads to bad PR, loss of income, and litigation.

You can disagree with someone while still being generous and gracious.

As a homeowner in a wealthy enclave who gets mistaken for the gardener all the time, I know this first-hand.

Being pragmatic with principles is not difficult.

Make sure it is part of your strategic business plan.
